The 2019 National Ride2Work Day is to be held on 16 October, offering participants free community breakfasts in cities, regional centres and workplaces across Australia.
Spokesperson for the Bicycle Network which is organising the event, Anthea Hargreaves said there were many benefits from swapping the car, train or bus for a bike.
“Riding to work is the easiest way to get your daily 30 minutes of exercise, but it is also cheaper, far less stressful and can also be the fastest way to get to work,” Ms Hargreaves said.
“Now in its 27th year, National Ride2Work Day is the best way to start riding to work if you haven’t done it before.
“Find someone from work who already rides to get some tips and head to your local community breakfast for a free feed and coffee.”
She said the Ride2Work program and its flagship national day of celebration were having a positive effect.
“More than half of people who ride to work for the first time on Ride2Work Day report that they convert to weekly bike riders,” Ms Hargreaves said.
“By being part of the celebrations, many people quickly find the confidence and support they need to get on their bikes and discover just how easy it is to ride to work.”
She said that even people who had to travel long distances to work could still find ways to get a ride in.
“You can ride to a local railway station and catch a train or drive some of the way and finish off on the bike,” Ms Hargreaves said.
