The new $600 million Southern Queensland Correctional Centre is one step closer to reality with the appointment of a principal consultant, the Minister for Corrective Services has announced.

The Minister, Mark Ryan (pictured) announced Guymer Bailey Architects as the successful contractor.

“I’m pleased to have Guymer Bailey Architects on board, as they have extensive experience in designing major infrastructure projects,” Mr Ryan said.

“Importantly, this milestone brings us closer to putting boots on the ground to build this facility.”

Guymer Bailey Architects were the lead design consultants on a series of major expansions of Cessnock’s Correctional Complex in NSW and involved in the design of Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville.

He said the $618.8 million project would support more than 400 jobs during construction, and more than 500 permanent jobs upon completion.

“It’s about investing in regional jobs today and for the future — the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre will be the first new prison in Queensland since 2012,” Mr Ryan said.

“This landmark infrastructure project is part of the Government’s investment in community safety.”

He said that when completed the state-of-the-art facility would accommodate approximately 1,000 beds for male prisoners.

“It will mean safer, less crowded, more effective prisons throughout the State, which will help reduce recidivism and keep communities safer,” Mr Ryan said.

The facility is scheduled for completion by 2023.
