NSW Health has issued an urgent alert following the confirmation of four cases of novel coronavirus in NSW.

Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard and Chief Health Officer at NSW Health, Kerry Chant urged people recently returned from Wuhan, or exposed to the virus, to be aware of potential symptoms and seek help if symptoms developed.

“Three adult males have been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus,” Dr Chant said.

“Two cases had travelled to Wuhan, China and one case had direct contact with a confirmed case from Wuhan while in China,” she said.

“These cases demonstrate the importance of returning travelers knowing the symptoms of novel coronavirus infection.”

Mr Hazzard urged people with symptoms to come forward as soon as they felt unwell.

“It is important people feel confident contacting their GP or local emergency Department,” Mr Hazzard said.

“They should also call ahead to speak to their GP or Emergency Department,” he said.

Mr Hazzard said NSW Health would continue to work closely with Commonwealth Government agencies to monitor travelers returning from Wuhan, China.

He said workers in NSW public hospitals and community-based GPs had been issued advice to help them identify cases and apply careful infection control measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
