Cool homeowners urged to warm up in winter

Consumer and Business Services (CBS) is warning South Australians to follow some important tips at home to warm up safely this winter.

In a statement, CBS said there were safety risks associated with many winter products like heaters, wheat/heat packs, hot water bottles and electric blankets, and, if care was not taken, they could pose a fire hazard.

The Agency said if homeowners had had smoke alarms for more than 10 years, then it was time for a replacement.

“Don’t forget to change the batteries and test your smoke alarm each year,” it said.

CBS said that with electric blankets, people should read the manufacturer’s instructions, check cords and wires and always turn them off before falling asleep.

CBS said that with hot water bottles, boiling water should never be used to fill them.

“Always use hot tap water to avoid burning yourself,” it said.

The Agency said hot water bottles should never be placed directly on skin, always use a fitted cover or wrap over the top, and do not leave on one part of the body for more than 20 minutes.

CBS said heaters should sit on a flat, level surface and be at least one metre away from combustible materials.

It said when using wheat/heat packs, it was important to allow the pack to cool before reheating it.

“Be sure to follow the heating instructions, and if you smell something burning then allow it to cool and dispose of the pack.”

CBS said fireplace chimneys should be clean and well ventilated and a mesh screen should sit in front of fireplaces to prevent sparks and wood from falling out.
