The Department of Transport has announced that its Concessions for Classics scheme is now in effect for eligible vehicles.
The Department said its scheme offered a 75 per cent registration discount for classic vehicles registered to an approved club, and applied to street rods and vehicles manufactured before 1990.
It said the owner of the eligible vehicle had to be a financial member of a Department-approved motoring club, or the vehicle was owned by an approved motoring club.
“Under Concessions for Classics, the annual registration discount would vary from vehicle-to-vehicle depending on specification,” the Department said.
It gave the examples of a 1956 Holden FJ registration dropping from $748.90 to $167.35 a year, and a 1929 Ford Roadster dropping from $721.20 to $139.65 a year.
Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti said she was aware how passionate classic car owners were about their vehicles.
“The purpose of this scheme is to cut red tape and encourage more classic cars and hot rods out of the garage and onto our roads,” Ms Saffioti said.
“It will reduce the financial cost of owning a classic vehicle which often are only driven on the weekend or for events, and encourage club membership, while stimulating spending in the automotive industries.”
She said the Department had worked closely with car clubs to refine the details of the policy.
“I can’t wait to see more classic cars and hot rods roaring onto our highways,” the Minister said.
