The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) and Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) have joined forces to run a series of information sessions to educate and empower multicultural and multifaith communities.
In a statement, VEOHRC said participating in one of the sessions would assist people to understand better and exercise their rights if they or someone they knew experienced racism, religious discrimination, or racial or religious vilification.
“You will also learn how to recognise racism, how to report it and where to seek advice and support,” the Commission said.
“A series of information sessions are planned for members of different communities,” it said.
“There is also a general session on 22 September 2020 which is open to all multicultural and multifaith communities in Victoria and will be run as a webinar rather than an interactive session.”
VEOHRC said the sessions would cover several topics, including: What discrimination, vilification and victimisation means; Where to get help and advice; How to report racism; Why reporting racism is important; and How to take action against racism.
“All sessions will be delivered online, via Zoom,” it said.
“The sessions will be interactive, with participants encouraged to contribute in a safe and confidential environment.”
It said sessions would run until 22 September, available to Asian communities; African communities; South Sudanese women; Muslim communities; South Asian communities; Māori and Pasifika communities; Youth; Muslim women; and Communities of Myanmar.
