The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has released a new publication featuring examples of outstanding environmental management in the resources sector.
The Rehabilitation Showcase highlights rehabilitation outcomes managed by mining and petroleum companies operating in the State following the closure of mine sites and exploration activities.
The online publication summarises the innovative techniques, research and monitoring the individuals and companies used to improve the rehabilitation of State forest areas, ecosystems and the restoration of land formations.
Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Bill Johnston said the Rehabilitation Showcase featured new technologies, innovative thinking and the conservation strategies that underpinned the safe and responsible development of Western Australia’s vast resources.
“I commend the companies featured in this book and their ongoing work in improving rehabilitation and closure outcomes in our State,” Mr Johnston said.
“They demonstrate that we can achieve a successful balance of good environmental governance with a resilient resources industry.”
In a statement, the Environmental Protection Authority said the rehabilitation of Western Australia’s unique flora and vegetation following the closure of large-scale mines was a continuing concern.
“With an estimated 76 per cent of proposals assessed in the Pilbara stipulating rehabilitation conditions as a basic obligation of mine closure, proper planning is needed to ensure these projects are able to meet the conditions of approval,” the Authority said.
