The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) is inviting the next generation of environmentalist to be part of the conversation on climate change at a conference later this month.

Announcing the Schools Climate Action Conference, the Directorate said the event, on 29 July, aimed to bring Canberra schools together to share and discuss the issue in their community.

“ACT school students are invited to a free one-day event to meet face to face with the people taking action to reduce emissions and address the climate emergency here in Canberra,” EPSDD said.

“Local change-makers including politicians, academics, businesspeople and community leaders will speak at the event, and students will have a chance to pose their questions in a Q&A panel discussion,” it said.

“Students will learn about the work taking place to reduce emissions and gain knowledge, confidence and skills to become climate action leaders within their school community and beyond.”

EPSDD said the conference would encourage students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to develop leadership skills by providing a safe environment to speak up on the climate issues that mattered to them.

It said students would gain skills and knowledge about climate change from experts and learn how to take climate action in school communities.

The Directorate said that at the conference students could also explore current and future career pathways.

“Teachers can register for a group of up to 10 students, or students can enrol individually,” it said.
