The City of Perth has outlined its plans for Lunar New Year celebrations, to welcome the Year of the Ox.
In a statement, the City said the annual celebration would combine traditional cultural celebrations with contemporary activations in the heart of city.
“A giant Chinese lantern wall will feature in Northbridge Piazza, allowing passers-by to interact and take photos with the colourful installation,” the city said.
“Nearby, people perusing Northbridge’s boutiques and eateries will be met with the sight of more than 300 beautiful red lanterns strung along James and William Street.”
Lord Mayor of the City of Perth, Basil Zempilas said the Chinese community was one of the city’ greatest strengths.
“On behalf of the City of Perth, I wish the Chinese community Gong Xi Fa Cai — Happy New Year,” Mr Zempilas said.
Luna New Year celebrations are part of the Perth Festival, bringing city streets to life with Australian music, performance, film and dance.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the dates of the festival have been rescheduled to run from 15 February to 14 March.
Mr Zempilas said the festival theme for 2021 was Bilya (river) “signifying connection and inspiration flowing through us all”.
“Throughout the festival, the Perth Cultural Centre will come to life for City of Lights, supported by Lotterywest, where the entire family can walk through a series of spectacular free projections and explore the surrounding venues,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Projections will turn the precinct into an immersive 360-degree cinematic thoroughfare, with its buildings drenched in vivid colours, telling powerful stories of our place in the world.”
He said that in championing local talent and Aboriginal culture, Perth Festival was celebrating community and its stories in a safe and welcoming environment.
