City Services is polishing up its grass mowing program using the first days of spring as the signal to send its city maintenance crews out to keep the city looking at its best.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said the crews would also maintain safety with a big spring growth expected after a wet winter.
“The focus for our crews will be mowing at roadside intersections to keep grass maintained to a safe level and prevent any line-of-sight issues for drivers,” Mr Steel said.
“We will also be mowing the irrigated parks around town at staggered times and ACT Government sportsgrounds, which are seeing extra traffic at the moment with more Canberrans doing individual exercise outside,” he said.
Mr Steel said that when the lockdown period ended, there would be a staged approach to ramping up normal mowing operations as more teams returned to work.
He said the ACT’s annual mowing program normally ran from September to March, with suburbs and areas of open space mown every four weeks and arterial road areas every five weeks.
Mr Steel said there were 73 mowers in the fleet with each mower covering an area of 68 hectares every four weeks.
The Minister said all mowers had been given a pre-season mechanical service and safety compliance check completed, which included testing GPS systems that were used to capture data on mown areas.
Mr Steel said that when the mowing program was in full operation after lockdown, this data would be used to populate a live mowing map that would show where crews had been and where they intended to mow.
