The City Renewal Authority and the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate have teamed up to celebrate the opening of the new City Walk upgrade with a community event during the annual DESIGN Canberra festival, this month.
The Authority said the event, Great Place, Great Day, challenged artists and community groups to create work and environments which responded the theme ‘care’.
“Building off DESIGN Canberra’s 2020 theme and placemaking principles set out in the Great Place Guide we invite viewers to join us for a day in the sun to experience the new City Walk upgrade,” the Authority said.
“Artists and the community come together to show us what it means to care for place, care for each other and care for the world,” it said.
The City Renewal Authority said artists and community groups would create murals at Petrie Plaza, Civic on 12 November.
“We invite you to visit Petrie Plaza and see the works come to life for yourself,” it said.
The Authority said Canberra born artist, Julia Fulop, would create a mural inspired by the climate crisis in collaboration with climate action community group SEE-Change.
It said Canberra artist, Yanni Pounartzis, would work with a group from YWCA, a not-for-profit organisation, based at Wanniassa High School to create a colourful and optimistic mural inspired by mental health challenges faced by young people.
