Canberrans are being invited to help shape the city centre with the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD) releasing draft documents to guide commercial development and redevelopment.
Encouraging people to have their say, the Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman said the draft City Plan and Urban Design Framework set out a range of proposals to ensure the city centre was a lively, inclusive, accessible and safe place for residents, businesses and visitors.
“The draft City Plan builds on the history of our city centre and its role in Canberrans’ lives,” Mr Gentleman said.
“It then proposes a range of ways to support business innovation, attract visitors and the provide for the growing residential population,” he said.
“It also incorporates long-term ACT Government projects, such as the Acton Waterfront redevelopment, the raising of London Circuit for Stage 2A of the Light Rail, and the revitalisation of the Canberra Theatre precinct.”
Mr Gentleman said the Plan also focused on how the restaurants, bars and venues that comprise Canberra’s night-time economy could be supported in balance with the needs of other users of the city centre.
He said the draft Urban Design Framework set out standards for building, street and open space design that private and public developers would need to adhere to.
“Together these draft plans represent a vision for a city centre that will cement our city centre’s position as a nation-leading cultural and economic hub,” the Minister said.
Mr Gentleman said the draft Plan and Framework were open for consultation until 13 March.
