The Department for Child Protection has launched the latest round of the Dame Roma Mitchell grants program aimed at supporting young people in care, or who have been in care, to improve their health and wellbeing and/or take advantage of development opportunities.
The Department said the children and young people aged under 30 were eligible to apply for the biannual grants program, which opened last Monday (16 August).
It said the State Government and South Australian Council for Social Services established the Dame Roma Mitchell Trust Fund (DRMTF) for Children and Young People to make the grants available.
The Department said $90,000 had been allocated to support eligible children and young people to achieve personal goals as well as help with their health and wellbeing.
It said that during 2020/21, 208 applications worth more than $170,000 were delivered to recipients to fund items such as furniture, white goods and laptops, art equipment, a sewing machine and a saxophone.
It said other recipients used the funding to help cover the costs of driving lessons and post-secondary courses.
Minister for Child Protection, Rachel Sanderson said the grants were designed to empower children and young people to help them achieve their dreams.
Ms Sanderson said the grants were also administered to children and young people living in kinship, foster and residential care.
The latest round applications close on Friday 24 September and information about how to apply can be accessed at this PS News link.
