Catch Up is one of the most impressive singles that I’ve heard this year.

Western Australia’s The Hunting Birds, now based in Melbourne, have already been recognised by the music industry by being awarded the 2019 WAM Award for their single Currents and I’m confident that Catch Up will feature heavily in this year’s award season.

The song was written by vocalist/guitarist Connor Minervini, vocalist/keyboardist Kendra Fewster and producer Joel Quartermain (G-Flip, Eskimo Joe) in a process that came together very quickly.

The song was written and recorded in about a day which meant that the band didn’t dwell on the track.

The result is a vibrant and uplifting song that contains an element of vitality that really only comes from a recording process that is mostly live.

Catch Up is a bit of a departure for the band who have mostly been an indie folk/pop band to this point.

This song however is pure pop with little to no folk influence.

The song, about the feeling of being out-of-step with someone you’re close to, is built around a catchy melody and delightful vocal harmonies.

It’s one of those songs that you find yourself singing along to by the time you get to the second chorus.

This is the sign of a perfectly tailored pop song.

I’m impressed with this band and it comes as no surprise to find out that the members met in WA when they were studying music.

Their songs are very well crafted and they understand and use melody and harmony well.

These may seem to be the necessary credentials to be a musician but they are sometimes seriously lacking.

I recon that The Hunting Birds are a band to watch.

Give this song a listen and add it to you surviving the pandemic tape.
