The Community Services Directorate has released a progress report on the Territory’s Carers Strategy to deliver a more inclusive community and provide carers with the support they need.
The Directorate’s report reveals that only three of the 25 recommended actions have been completed however.
Minister for Community Services and Facilities, Suzanne Orr tabled the progress report, ACT Carers Strategy 2018-2028 Progress Report 2020, which provides an update on the actions under the first three-year Action Plan.
“To date, there are three actions completed, 21 actions underway and one to be commenced shortly,” Ms Orr said.
“The Action Plan is being delivered by 12 lead Agencies across Government and the community sector, with support from a further 20 Agencies,” she said.
Ms Orr said she recognised the hard work and resilience of carers during the COVID-19 pandemic and reiterated the commitment to deliver all actions under the Action Plan.
In its progress report, the Directorate said 10 actions were in the planning stage; early progress had been made on eight actions; and significant progress had been made on three.
It said action was yet to commence on the development of standard wording around recognition and the support of carers in the workplace and supporting advocacy work.
The Directorate said it had completed work on the development and delivery of a handbook to outline an improved understanding of the role of kinship and foster carers in the child protection and out of home care systems; promote carers in the ACT during National Carers Week; and include carers in consultation and planning for Better Suburbs.
