Canberra has been named the best Australian city for bike riding by We Ride Australia, a not-for-profit charitable organisation.

We Ride Australia used a new tool, Bicycle Transport Analysis (BTA), to score every Australian capital city on the ability to travel by bicycle between key local destinations.

Executive Officer at We Ride Australia, Peter Bourke said Canberra took out the top spot with a score of 61 out of 100.

“Canberra has come out as the leading capital with its extensive on and off-road network providing good links throughout the city,” Mr Bourke said.

“Investments in projects such as the Inner City Loop bikeway and ongoing commitment to closing missing links has reinforced Canberra as our most bikeable city,” he said.

“However, Canberra’s mode share is still low by international standards and the ratings and associated stress maps will help pinpoint where and how Canberra can invest to make riding easier, more enjoyable and safer.”

Mr Bourke said more than 650 North American, European and Australian cities had been scored, with Canberra comparable to cities such as Brooklyn, New York (60), Paris, France (61) and Boulder, Colorado (63).

In Australia Melbourne came second with a score of 44 out of 100, closely followed by Sydney, 43; Brisbane, 40; Perth, 40; Adelaide, 39; Darwin, 35; and Hobart, 28.

Canberra’s BTA Score Summary can be accessed on We Ride Australia’s website at this PS News link.
