The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate is encouraging people to walk and ride locally during the fifth annual Canberra Walk and Ride Week this week (15-21 March).
Transport Canberra said the Week encouraged people to break the unconscious habit of reaching for the car keys whenever they left the house and to challenge themselves to adopt active travel in the long term.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Christ Steel said this year’s theme was Walk and ride local to remind people that they didn’t always need to use a car, especially when travelling locally or in close proximity to their homes.
“COVID-19 restrictions saw more people walking and cycling around their local area and March is the best time to get out and about due to the favourable weather,” Mr Steel said.
“Canberra also has an excellent network of shared paths and identified routes that people can use without having to go on road,” he said.
“In the last few years Canberra has seen a significant investment in new paths and treatments which make walking and cycling safer and more pleasant for everyone.”
Mr Steel said Transport Canberra’s journey planner, in combination with local cycling and walking maps, would help people discover their local area.
The Minister said the 2021 Canberra Walk and Ride Week calendar included the National Ride2School day this Friday (19 March) and Pedal Power’s Big Canberra Bike Ride on Sunday (21 March).
