Cancer Institute NSW has launched a campaign to help people make the most of their New Year’s resolutions and quit smoking.

Launching its latest New Year, New You campaign – Be Smoke Free in ’23 – the Institute said the New Year is traditionally a peak quitting period for people who smoke.

“The more prepared people feel, the more likely they are for it to be a successful quit attempt,” the Institute said.

“To leverage this heightened relevancy, the Cancer Institute NSW has planned a tactical campaign to encourage people to quit smoking over New Year,” it said.

“Smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death and disease in NSW, but quitting at any time is one of the most effective things people can do to reduce cancer risk and live a longer, healthier life.”

The Institute said the campaign, running through to the end of this month, aimed to capture the audience as they made New Year plans, and support them into 2023 as they began on their quit journeys.

“Working together we can help more people quit – resources and information are available to help individuals and organisations spread the message,” it said.

“In addition to quitting smoking, there are many lifestyle resolutions that people can make to feel great and reduce their cancer risk.”

The Institute said people could also reduce their cancer risk by drinking less or no alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy, being more active, and protecting their skin.
