Construction workplaces are to become more inclusive under a new project focussing on the retention of women in the industry.

Minister for Women, Yvette Berry said the Industry Coordination Project, to be developed by the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union’s ACT branch (CFMEU ACT), would aim to improve the culture of the construction industry and build respectful relationships in the workplace.

“The Project will work with both employees and employers to better understand the factors that are impacting inclusion and participation in the construction industry and the tools required to address them,” Ms Berry said.

“All workplaces have a responsibility to foster and promote gender equality,” she said.

“This will continue to be a challenge in industries that are traditionally male‑dominated and this initiative is an important step in the right direction to driving long-term change.”

Ms Berry said a dedicated industry coordination officer would be employed to design and implement the Project.

The Minister said the officer would provide an important connection between Government and the industry to support and inform Government initiatives to increase women’s participation in the construction industry.

Branch Secretary of CFMEU ACT, Jason O’Mara said the union was excited to work with its members, their employers and other stakeholders in the industry to improve the experience of women in construction.

“During the Industry Coordination Project, the union will develop practical strategies to build safer and more inclusive workplaces for everyone in the industry,” Mr O’Mara said.
