Belconnen Owl to carry letters round the country

Belconnen’s Powerful Owl is the face of the town centre’s new postmark with the iconic sculpture to feature on outbound mail from the Belconnen Post Centre.

According to Our CBR, the new postmark’s release was delayed to coincide with the 11-year anniversary of the sculpture’s unveiling.

It said the Powerful Owl figure, made by Bruce Armstrong, was commissioned in 2011 and depicted Ninox Strenua – the largest owl species in Australia.

CBR said the Manager of the Belconnen Post Office, Bradley Stanhope, was the driving force behind the development of the new postmark and was ecstatic to see the stamp through to completion.

“The idea of a permanent Belconnen pictorial postmark was initially pitched by one of our team members,” Mr Stanhope (pictured) said.

“I then looked into the process and submitted our application to the Australia Post head office in Melbourne.

“Postmarks are usually released earlier in the year but because of the significance of the 12th of May, we decided to delay the release to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the statue,” he said.

“I’ve been surprised already with the amount of interest we’ve had outside of Belconnen and from collectors.”

Mr Stanhope said that last week, the post office received a self-addressed letter from Japan requesting the new postmark.

Our CBR said that although the postmark would not appear on all outgoing mail, customers could make a request to have their mail stamped with it when sending items from the Belconnen post centre.
