Australia Post has joined forces with Australian Red Cross to support the communities in Queensland and Northern NSW who have been devastated by the recent flooding disaster.
Under the arrangement, donations for the Red Cross Floods Appeal are being accepted in participating Post Offices all over the nation.
Head of Community at Australia Post, Nicky Tracey said the funds raised in its offices would help the Red Cross provide vital humanitarian support to flood-affected communities.
“They will be deploying specialist emergency volunteers, providing important psychological first aid and support at evacuation centres, and helping affected residents get in touch with their loved ones,” Ms Tracey said.
“We are a key partner of the Australian Red Cross and are helping to ensure important resources are readily available to activate response services directly to the affected areas,” she said.
Ms Tracey said this was an extremely emotional time “and our thoughts are with the many people and communities impacted by the devastation of these floods”.
“I want to recognise and give my heartfelt thanks to all our team members on the ground playing a critical support role and also to the emergency services and volunteers who are working so hard to support people in these areas,” she said.
Acting Director of Australian Programs at the Red Cross, Garry Page said the record rainfall had created a huge demand for support.
“Our staff and volunteers have rallied to meet this demand, in some cases in spite of the fact they have faced flood damage and isolation involving their own homes and families,” Mr Page said. “Funds raised from the Appeal will help Red Cross provide immediate and longer-term humanitarian support to people across flood-devastated communities,” he said.
