Six months after a special team was established to uplift the data capability of members of the Australian Public Service, the Data Professional Stream Team at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released an update on its progress.
Director of the Data Professional Stream at ABS, Lisette Aarons said the Team had a range of innovative projects and initiatives underway.
“The information, opportunities and frameworks created through the Data Professional Stream need to be valuable to current and future potential Australian Public Service (APS) employees, people working in corporate services functions, and APS Agency executives,” Ms Aarons said.
“Successful delivery also relies on cross Agency leadership and collaboration, which is already underway with 24 Agencies playing key roles in developing the Data Professional Stream,” she said.
“Our role is to support the Head of Profession, Dr David Gruen in promoting and raising awareness of the Data Professional Stream, lead and manage key projects, and connect across the Digital and HR Professional streams and the Australian Public Service Commission.”
Ms Aarons said the Team’s first foundational initiative was the Data Capability Framework which supported the building of data professionalisation across the public sector.
She said the Team was also working on data roles with the Australian Taxation Office, which was leading the development of data roles and role descriptions.
She said data literacy learning pathways were also being developed, with Services Australia to build its own data literacy foundations development program.
Ms Aarons said the Team’s immersion initiative, to offer learning through experience, was in a discovery phase.
“All data profession invested Agencies are encouraged to test immersion activities and can contact the core ABS team to get started,” she said.
