The Department of Education has announced that free after-school homework centres are to start in 120 State schools next term.
The new centres will open up progressively during the term at schools from Thursday Island to the Gold Coast and west to Thargomindah.
Launching the plan, Minister for Education, Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing, Grace Grace said homework was an important part of every child’s education, but it could be a challenge for busy families at the end of the day.
“Our new free homework centres will provide a supportive, supervised environment for students to complete their homework before they go home for the day,” Ms Grace said.
“Children can build good study habits and families can spend quality time together without any pressure to supervise homework,” she said.
Ms Grace said the dedicated homework centres would also assist parents who might need more flexible working arrangements.
“Families can register their child in the program by contacting their school,” she said.
“The program will operate for up to three hours per week, 30 weeks a year, during term time.
“Each participating school will plan their homework centre sessions around the age and learning and development needs of the students attending.
“A healthy snack will also be provided to the students.”
Ms Grace said the centres would make a real difference in children’s education and the everyday lives of many families.
