The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has launched a package of active travel initiatives and strategic corridor projects under a new City-wide transport layout.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel announced the package as part of the ACT Budget 2021-22, saying it would help to connect regions, public transport and active travel infrastructure.
“We are connecting the growing communities of West Belconnen and the Molonglo Valley by duplicating William Hovell Drive from John Gorton Drive to Drake Brockman Drive,” Mr Steel said.
“This will include an upgrade to the intersection with Drake Brockman Drive and building a new seven kilometre off-road shared path providing a new cycle link to the City,” he said.
Mr Steel said the transport package allocated $45 million to active travel initiatives to increase the City’s current pipeline of walking and cycling projects.
“Active travel is a key part of our plan to build a more vibrant and sustainable City and that’s why we are making new investments in cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, as well as investing more in public transport,” he said.
The Minister said the new active travel initiatives included construction of a four-kilometre shared path along the southern side of Sulwood Drive; a new shared path connection and bridge to link Coombs near Klos Crossing to the City cycle path network; a route planning study for active travel links the Gungahlin Town Centre; and cycle path maintenance across Canberra.
Mr Steel said the package would also see feasibility and planning work undertaken for the Garden City Cycle Route; a new trunk cycle route from Watson through to the City; and the extension of City Services’ Age Friendly Suburbs Program to Chifley, O’Connor, Reid and Scullin.
