ACT Human Rights finding racism every day

The ACT Human Rights’ Children and Young People Commissioner has flagged a finding in her ongoing consultation with the children and young people that they are experiencing racism in the ACT.

The Commissioner, Jodie Griffiths-Cook said her consultation, launched in March and to continue until August, had already heard that children and young people experienced racism daily, “in almost every facet of their lives.”

Ms Griffiths-Cook said that although she was often surprised by the level of graciousness underpinning the resilience that young people displayed, there was also a worrying level of resignation.

“Many of the children and young people we have spoken to seem resigned to the occurrence of racism,” Ms Griffiths-Cook said.

“Almost with a shrug of their shoulders, they have recounted regular instances of casual racism and ‘othering’ that they put up with,” she said.

“They should not have to!”

Ms Griffiths-Cook said the more extreme examples of direct racism did lead to some of the children seeking help from adults, but the response they got was often far from ideal.

The Commissioner said the conversation was ongoing, but some themes were emerging pointing to a lack of resources and understanding among adults.

“This leads to inadequate support for children and young people who experience racism,” she said.

“There is clearly a real presence of racism in our city that is affecting multicultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.”

Ms Griffiths-Cook said that through the consultation her team was also hearing a wealth of ideas about how to combat racism, “many of which simply start with talking and listening.”
