The ACT Health Directorate has updated its advice to the public in relation to the novel coronavirus threat.
In its advice it said ACT Health had well established processes and procedures in place for the management of infectious diseases and was working in partnership with the Commonwealth Department of Health to monitor and respond to the situation.
It said there had been a significant change in the measures Australia was taking to protect the community against the virus.
“The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has noted the increasing (but still relatively small) number of cases in provinces in mainland China, outside of Hubei Province,” the Directorate said.
“As a result, the Australian Government has announced additional measures to protect the whole community against novel coronavirus.
“For this reason, and in line with national health advice, we are taking a highly precautionary approach.”
The Directorate said that if travellers returning from mainland China or who had transited through mainland China (excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), they must isolate themselves at home.
“If you have had contact with any confirmed case of novel coronavirus, you need to isolate yourself for 14 days from the date of your last exposure to the case,” the Directorate said.
It said that being isolated at home meant staying at home for the full period, unless medical attention was needed outside the home.
“You cannot go to work, school, or public areas, and should not use public transportation, ride share or taxis,” the Directorate said.
It said a Coronavirus Health Information Line had been set up, with anyone seeking information urged to call 1800 020 080 between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Friday.
