Accountants bring PS leaders to account

The Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) have announced the winners of their annual Leadership in Government Awards

The awards, which celebrate outstanding achievements by Australian Public Service (APS) leaders, were presented last week at a special ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra.

According to CA ANZ the Awards showcase APS leaders making the “greatest contributions to the prosperity and stability of the country”.

“Judges will be looking for Australian Public Service leaders who: Exemplify personal drive and integrity; Cultivate productive working relationships; Shape strategic thinking; Communicate with influence; and Achieve results,” it said.

“There are categories for well-established public servants and those in the early stages of their careers who show great future potential.

“The awards will be judged by an independent panel that includes previous winners and is chaired by former Federal Commissioner of Taxation, Michael D’Ascenzo.”

The 2018 winners are:

Outstanding Graduate of the Year 2018

For young APS leaders with 3 years or less experience

Winner:

Jacqueline Ferrer, Department of Human Services

Prize: $10,000 sabbatical to invest in leadership development

Highly Commended:

Victoria Haffey, Australian Taxation Office
Margaret Sheehan, Department of Communication and the Arts

Emerging Leader of the Year 2018

For young APS leaders who completed their degree in past 5 years

Winner:

Susan Fitzgerald, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

Prize: $10,000 sabbatical to invest in leadership development

Highly Commended

Lauren Callinan, Department of Human Services

Outstanding Contribution in Public Administration 2018

For those holding positions in SES band 1-3 and executive Level 2

Winners:

Lily Viertmann, Australian Bureau of Statistics
Hoa Wood, Australian Taxation Office

Prize: $20,000 sabbatical to invest in leadership development

Highly Commended

Emma Kate McGuirk, Department of Social Services
John Shepherd, Australian Taxation Office
