The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NSW newsroom is rolling out social media videos featuring Sydney community leaders delivering COVID-19 health warnings in a variety of languages.
The ABC said that so far, the community service videos had been produced in Assyrian, the top non-English language spoken at home in Fairfield, with Dr Mariam Joseph (pictured left) from NSW Health.
They have also been produced in Vietnamese, with Federal President of the Vietnamese Community in Australia, Kate Hoang (pictured second left); Cantonese, with Georges River Councillor, Nancy Liu (pictured second right); and Mandarin, with GP Dr Jiang Li (pictured right).
It said the production of videos in Arabic and Khmer was underway.
“The videos are produced by the ABC’s Western Sydney team based on NSW Health messaging,” the ABC said.
It said the videos were featured on the ABC Sydney facebook and Instagram accounts and were being cross-promoted on the ABC News channel and the 7pm News.
In her video, Dr Joseph spoke about the latest COVID-19 restrictions in Greater Sydney and outlined key points such as the restriction limiting essential shopping to one person per household per day.
Dr Joseph also asked community members to support each other from a distance.
“Please use your mobile phones to call each other and talk with each other, and to give support and strength for each other,” Dr Joseph said.
“COVID-19, and specifically the latest variant which is called Delta, can spread very quickly,” she said.
“Therefore, it is so important to stay home and not to visit each other at houses and not to meet with our relatives, friends or acquaintances.”
Dr Joseph advised those who had been asked to get tested or to isolate to do so and to follow the instructions from NSW Health.
