The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has been recognised for building privacy and data protection into everything it does, winning three awards at the inaugural CyberCX Privacy by Design Awards.

Celebrating its success, the ABC said it had received Federal Government recognition as the ‘Top Performer’ for embedding privacy assurances to ensure that people maintained their trust in its role as the national broadcaster.

“Privacy by Design is a process for embedding good privacy practices into the design specifications of technologies, business practices and physical infrastructures,” the ABC said.

“Seven key principles are applied to ensure privacy and data protection considerations are incorporated into the design of all systems, processes and products that touch personal information.”

It said in preparing for the award ceremony, CyberCX analysed the digital ‘shopfronts’ of leading Australian consumer brands across 11 industry sectors against the Privacy by Design Principles.

“The ABC was the strongest performer in the ‘Principle 6: Visibility and Transparency – Keep it Open’ award category where we were recognised for the overall presentation of our privacy-related information, privacy features, and ease of understanding with our privacy notices,” the Broadcaster said.

“The ABC was also acknowledged as the strongest performer in the ‘Principle 7: Respect for User Privacy – Keep it User-Centric’ award category for the design of our digital platforms where the privacy of our audience members’ personal information is at the forefront of everything we do,” it said.
