The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) News division is holding a series of briefing sessions with its teams to discuss the ABC News’ 2020-2023 editorial strategy, More Relevant to More Australians.
The Broadcaster said the News Strategy aligned with the ABC Five-Year Plan 2020-2025, which laid out next steps as the ABC continues to transform from a traditional broadcaster to a trusted and valued digital content provider.
It said the News Strategy had four pillars: to be a part of more communities; to be more approachable; to keep quality journalism at its core; and to be more available on demand.
“While we’re showing growth in reach and relevance, our audience profile has always been particularly strong in the inner cities and in the bush, while people in the suburbs of our cities and towns have been under-represented,” the ABC said.
“We know we can do a better job getting into the outer suburbs and telling the stories of those communities, too,” it said.
“We can be more culturally, socio-economically and gender diverse, and we can grow audiences at a time when it’s assumed the mainstream media is inevitably shrinking.”
The ABC said being more approachable was about conversational storytelling, not relying on assumed knowledge and making its content more accessible.
“Quality is in our DNA and that will never change,” it said.
“The ABC is the home of Australia’s best and most trustworthy journalism.”
It said that ensuring ABC News content was available whenever and wherever people wanted to access it would help the Broadcaster stay relevant and valuable to future audiences.
