ABC faces up to Facebook

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has released information on how to access its content following action taken by Facebook to restrict users in Australia from news and other important sources of information.

The ABC said Facebook’s action was in response to the Federal Government’s proposed legislation, the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code.

“But we still have many ways to reach Australians online – including via our own digital sites and broadcast platforms, ABC iview, ABC listen, ABC News, our YouTube channels, Twitter, Instagram and through our newsletters,” the Broadcaster said.

Managing Director at the ABC, David Anderson said ABC News was Australia’s number one digital news service and the nation’s most trusted news outlet.

“The ABC’s digital news services will always remain free and accessible to all Australians on the ABC website and via the ABC News app, providing independent and reliable news, information and analysis,” Mr Anderson said.

“Despite key issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic having ongoing effects on all Australians, Facebook has today removed important and credible news and information sources from its Australian platform,” he said.

Mr Anderson said the ABC would continue its discussions with Facebook following the news content restriction.
