The Department for Environment and Water has advised visitors to Riverland and Murraylands parks that many of the campsites, roads and tracks popular in the area are to be closed until the end of January next year.
The Department said the expected increase in water to reach the parks by early December will reach 165 Gigalitres a day (GL/Day) and, as a result, low-lying areas and floodplains will be covered in water causing all campsites and most access tracks in all Riverland parks to close with the exception of the Mallee parks Danggali, Pooginook and Cooltong Conservation Parks.
It said day visitors were still welcome however, but they must only access the parks by driving on open roads, walking, mountain biking, or via small boats if safe to do so.
District Ranger, Benita Dillion said several extensive rain events had occurred this year causing the closure of several campsites and tracks since September.
“The river-based park tracks can become slippery and wet during rainfall events, so during this time, they are closed for public safety,” Ranger Dillion said
“As waters rise, to ensure the safety of everyone, it’s important to keep informed and visit the website before you head out,” she said.
She said the water had caused the closure of all campsites and most access tracks in all Riverland parks.
Rangers are to continue to monitor parks and provide updates on accessibility to reopen when possible.
“It’s really important that visitors obey these track closures to ensure they remain safe,” Ranger Dillion said.
