Canberra’s new public transport ticketing system is one step closer with the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate entering the final stages of procurement.
Deputy Director-General for Transport Canberra and Business Services, Ben McHugh said he expected a supplier to be appointed by the middle of the year.
“The introduction of a new ticketing system will be the biggest improvement to our public transport network since Canberra’s light rail started operations in 2019,” Mr McHugh said.
“This new system is intended to make catching the bus or light rail quick, easy and simple,” he said.
“It will provide more flexible payment options, including the option to pay by mobile phone or by tapping on and off with a credit card.”
Mr McHugh said there was also a plan for the ticketing system to link up with a real-time app for customers to track services and plan their journey.
The Deputy Director-General said this feature would be particularly important as public transport services were expanded to more new suburbs and work on building the light rail to Woden began.
“The new ticketing system will be designed to provide Canberra’s public transport users with convenient and flexible payment methods and real-time travel information,” Mr McHugh said.
