The State’s public health team has given its stamp of approval to shortening the interval between Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses to help the community reach its double dose targets faster.
Announced by Premier, Daniel Andrews, the interval between first and second doses of the Pfizer shot was originally extended from three to six weeks at State-run centres in August.
“Following advice from our public health team, and firmer projections for supply for the final week in October, the Pfizer interval will be reduced to three weeks,” Mr Andrews said.
“The change also recognises the amazing efforts of Victorians to come forward and get their first doses, with the 80 per cent first dose milestone reached,” he said.
“This means that anyone who has received their first dose of Pfizer will be able to bring forward their second dose – if they choose to.”
Mr Andrews said changes had been made to the vaccine booking system and people were now able to book in for their second dose from three weeks after they had their first.
The Premier said there were limited appointments available in the State system due to supply and encouraged anyone wanting to book an appointment to check with their GP and pharmacy too.
“If you haven’t booked your appointment, or are waiting for a particular vaccine, do not wait – the best vaccine is the one you can get today,” he said.
Mr Andrews said the next threshold in the State’s reopening Roadmap would be reached when Victoria hit the 70 per cent double dose vaccination target which, before the reduction in dosage interval, was projected for 26 October.
