MALDIVES: Ultimatum on training failures

The Maldives Civil Service Commission (CSC) is to get tough with Public Servants who consistently fail or don’t complete training courses required for their employment, saying they will face dismissal.

In a circular, the CSC said Public Servants who were granted paid leave to pursue such education would also have to compensate their employers for the expenses of their courses as per the law and the agreement between the employee and employer.

“However, in cases where Civil Servants fail or do not complete courses that are not required for their employment, they would simply be reinstated in their current position,” the CSC said.

“For Civil Servants that were granted leave to pursue education for a reserved senior position, failing or not completing the course will result in reinstatement to their current position or another post of the same rank,” it said.

In cases where workers failed or did not complete courses, but were not terminated, the Commission said employers could stipulate that they must pay back the cost of the course over a mutually agreed period though money being taken from their salaries.

The CSC also directed employers to seek compensation for any extra expenses spent on the employees during their courses, either in the form of one-off settlements or monthly deductions from workers’ salaries.
