The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) says proposed changes to public media funding in Slovenia will put the service in jeopardy.
In a statement that was supported by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), and the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), the EBU said proposed amendments to the Slovenian Radio and Television Act drastically reduced finances for public media and marginalised its role.
The statement also expressed concern at the short period of five days envisaged for public discussions.
“Slovenian broadcaster, RTVSLO has already been facing financial challenges with the current licence fee, which has not been changed since 2012, while the content and platform demands have been constantly increasing,” the Union said.
“The suggested changes to the funding of RTVSLO will result in a significant decrease of RTVSLO’s budget of around €13 million ($A21.25 million),” it said.
EBU said this would greatly challenge the fulfilment of public service media’s remit which, as defined in law, had to serve all segments of society to inform, educate and entertain.
Director General of the EBU, Noel Curran said he had written to the Slovenian authorities to raise concerns, asking them to provide more time for proper public discussion of the changes to funding to ensure all views could be heard.
“RTVSLO is an important institution which significantly contributes to democracy. It should be guaranteed adequate, stable and predictable funding to help it fulfil its important remit to society,” Mr Curran said.
