Sustainability Victoria has announced the finalists in the 2020 ResourceSmart Schools Awards.
The Agency said this year marked the 12th edition of Victoria’s largest school sustainability awards program with more than 30 Victorian schools shortlisted.
“With 65 entries submitted across 11 categories, this year’s judges had difficult decisions to make,” Sustainability Victoria said.
“The awards are open to all Victorian schools to celebrate and recognise the efforts of students, teachers and parents who are inspiring sustainability action in their communities and reducing their environmental impact,” it said.
“The 2020 awards theme, people and the planet, recognises how we use our humanity – our knowledge, care and passion – to look after the environment, and how this contributes to our wellbeing in return.”
Sustainability Victoria said ResourceSmart Schools was a free program that supported Victorian schools to embed sustainability in their community and curriculum.
“Since the program started in 2008, over 1,400 schools have participated, saving a total of $29 million through waste, water and energy reductions and preventing 80,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions,” it said.
“This program not only encourages schools to make positive changes on campus and at home, it also facilitates the development of environmental citizens.”
The Authority said winners would be announced at an awards ceremony on World Environment Day, 5 June.
