Transport Canberra has moved to give employment to workers stood down from their usual roles within the wider transport industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Transport Canberra said its initiative was part of the Jobs for Canberrans Fund and would provide employment opportunities for people in the casual or semi-skilled workforce who had lost their jobs or been significantly impacted due to the pandemic.
The Agency said it had already hired an additional 36 workers since mid-March.
“These 36 workers will see more than 1,080 hours of cleaning undertaken on Transport Canberra buses each week,” it said.
“This work supports the ramped-up cleaning regime occurring on Canberra buses, light rail vehicles and at interchanges, stops and stations.
“It will keep customers and drivers safe as the ACT Government responds to COVID-19.”
Transport Canberra said other new jobs, made available under the Jobs for Canberrans Fund included customer service roles at Access Canberra; city cleaning; garden and tree maintenance; environmental recovery in Namadgi; and other administrative support roles.
“The roles will have minimal pre-requisites and can be undertaken in line with public health directions,” it said.
“Highest priority will be given to those who are ineligible for any Australian Government support.”
