The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has temporarily suspended classes as it prepares to switch to online learning during the COVID-19 crisis.

Chief Executive at CIT, Leanne Cover said the Institute would undertake business continuity arrangements this week before relaunching classes online.

“CIT has made a decision to pause classes for one week, from Monday 23 March, and we are asking students not to attend campuses for the week,” Ms Cover said.

“This pause will give CIT teaching staff the opportunity to reconfigure delivery of teaching and learning and further ensure social distancing practices into our learning environment, so we can continue to provide ongoing quality training for our students.

Ms Cover said the CIT had no reported cases of COVID-19 on its campus so far.

“During this week student support services will still be available via phone or online,” Ms Cover said.

“Our facilities and spaces across all CIT locations will remain open but we strongly encourage students not to attend campuses.”

She said facilities that would remain open included the CIT libraries and the Reid Early Childhood Centre.

“At all times social distancing and personal hygiene practices will continue to be in place at all CIT locations,” Ms Cover said.

“We anticipate recommencing learning on Monday, 30 March, and hope to continue to provide educational services up to our scheduled break on Thursday, 9 April.”
