The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has received multiple reports of COVID-19-themed scam text messages being sent to members of the public.
In a statement, the ACCC said its scam watchdog, Scamwatch, found scammers were impersonating the Government using fake emails and text messages to try and obtain personal data.
“Scams include phishing emails and phone calls impersonating the World Health Organisation, Government authorities, and legitimate businesses, including travel agents and telecommunications companies,” the ACCC said.
“Be aware of fraudulent emails claiming to be from experts saying that they have information about the virus,” it said.
“For the most up-to-date information about the Coronavirus, visit the websites of the Department of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO).”
It urged consumers to be careful of fake online shopping sites requesting unusual payment methods such as upfront payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, preloaded card or electronic currency like Bitcoin.
“The best way to detect a fake trader or social media online shopping scam is to search for reviews before purchasing,” the ACCC said.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) said it was also aware of a COVID-19- themed scam being distributed via text message.
“The text messages appear to come from ‘GOV’ as the sender and they include a link to find out when to “get tested in your geographical area” for COVID-19,” the ACSC said.
“The link in these text messages is not legitimate, and if clicked on, may install malicious software on your device, designed to steal your banking details,” the Centre said.
