Green light for intersection upgrade

The busy intersection of Gungahlin’s Old Well Station Road and the Federal Highway is to be upgraded with the installation of traffic lights.

Announcing the measure, Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said it was expected the upgrade will improve the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Ms Fitzharris said the intersection was an important approach to Canberra, providing access to EPIC, the Farmer’s Markets, Canberra Park Resort and the broader Mitchell area.

“Traffic lights will ensure that access to these places is controlled, which will significantly improve safety and improve the traffic flow at peak times,” Ms Fitzharris said.

“Works will also be undertaken on the approaches to the intersection. On the Old Well Station Road approach the pavement will be widened and realigned to improve sight lines and increase right turn capacity.”

She said that on the Federal Highway approach, the left and right turn lanes would be increased in length to cater for anticipated traffic demands.

“A new footpath will also be constructed on the east side of Old Well Station Road to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists,” the Minister said.

She said this would require a closure of Old Well Station Road between Morisset Road and the Federal Highway from early this month until July. Access to EPIC would be via Morisset Road and Stirling Avenue.

“Works to upgrade this intersection will be coordinated with the light rail project to minimise traffic disruption. Construction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2018,” Ms Fitzharris said.
