The First Nations Gathering event is designed by First Nations people for First Nations people working in Victoria’s public sector.

A series of guest speakers will share their personal experiences of working in the sector and discussions will reflect on truth and treaty, resilience, the complexity of walking in two worlds, how to make a professional development plan that works for you – and more.

Presented by the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) Victoria, this is an opportunity for First Nations staff from all levels of the VPS, across different roles and departments, to gather and connect in a culturally safe space.

Almost everything we do in the workplace involves communication and our overall job effectiveness is strongly influenced by how well we communicate.

In the APS, we require the ability to present information clearly, concisely and in a compelling manner, going to the heart of the issue with speed and clarity.

Effective communication is about being able to deliver strategic and operational information quickly and clearly to a specific target audience or individual. As such, effective communication considers the needs and characteristics of the specific audience.

Participants should bring two current samples of writing when they attend. These may be emails, briefs, reports, or other writing from the workplace. Editing practice can be applied directly to their own work. All writing remains confidential and will not be shared or discussed.

Focusing on prevention, intervention, diversion and recovery, the Transforming Indigenous Justice Conference will inform and enable knowledge-sharing on critical topics including justice reinvestment, empowering communities, alternatives to remand and incarceration, and preventing continuing harm to young people.

Through storytelling, reflection and connection, this conference will elevate the voice and choice of First Nations women, children and men. Approaches will be explored that address the causes and drivers of contact with the criminal justice system as well as projects that have embedded meaningful outcomes.

The discussion will tackle the causes leading to interactions with the criminal justice system and shine a spotlight on successful programs that have delivered place-based community-driven alternatives to detention.
