A recent graduate at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Siobhan Tobin has been awarded the 2019 Rhodes Scholarship for Victoria.
Ms Tobin (pictured) is one of 100 scholars worldwide to receive the scholarship which enables young people to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Chief Executive of ANSTO, Adi Paterson said the Organisation was proud to have one of its own become part of this prestigious award.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Siobhan and a bold testament to her hard work and dedication,” Dr Patterson said.
“It will allow her to pursue her studies at one of the most reputable universities in the world,” he said.
“This is also a tremendous moment to draw attention to the contribution of the young women in our organisation, and the wonderful ways they contribute to our world.”
He said ANSTO was looking forward to seeing what new insights and discoveries Ms Tobin bring away from Oxford and he was confident her new knowledge would further benefit the organisation.
Honorary Secretary of the Victorian Rhodes Selection Committee, Professor Carolyn Evans said the Committee was impressed by Ms Tobin’s passion for the sciences generally and physics in particular.
“She had a wonderful mix of theoretical understanding developed during her study at the Australian National University and practical experience from her time at ANSTO,” Professor Evans said.
