Winners in the 2018 ACT Public Education Awards have been announced.
The awards acknowledge principals, teachers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education leadership, support staff, partnerships and volunteers.
Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry and the Director-General of the Education Directorate, Natalie Howson presented the awards.
Award recipients were:
Education Support Person of the Year – Frank Maynard (Gowrie Primary School) for his active engagement of students, working tirelessly to create gardens, green sheds, and inclusive playgrounds.
Volunteer of the Year – Leah House (Namadgi School) for her ongoing contribution to Namadgi School and ACT public education.
New Educator of the Year – Jennifer Tabur (Lyneham High School) for her focus on providing enrichment and engagement opportunities for her students.
Early Childhood Teacher of the Year – Sharon de Rooy (Bonython Primary School) for her advocacy and role model for continual learning.
Primary Teachers of the Year – Anthea Theodoridis and Matthew Weickhard (Gordon Primary School) for their work spearheading a transformation in the social and psychological wellbeing of students.
Secondary Teacher of the Year – Janet Richardson (University of Canberra High School Kaleen) for her willingness to mentor and support staff and for being an early adopter of new initiatives and technologies.
Outstanding Partnership of the Year – Andrew Kingston (Kids Hope Mentoring and Isabella Plains Early Childhood School) for coordinating this program since 2010 with more than 25 children mentored.
Leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education – Kelly Pulver (Evatt School) for her implementation of the 8 Ways Pedagogy, which enables teachers to include Aboriginal perspectives by using Aboriginal learning techniques.
School Leader of the Year – Cheryl Diggins (Instrumental Music Program) for her huge impact on the growth of arts events and learning across schools.
