Canberra City is to come alive in the lead-up to Christmas this year with the City Renewal Authority and EventsACT combining to fund a season of festive activities for the whole family.
Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister, Andrew Barr said it built on the success of last year’s festive season.
“Christmas in the heart of Canberra will be even bigger and better this year with a significant increase in funding to help create a more festive experience,” Mr Barr said.
“Not only will there be a full program of events from 14 December through to Christmas Eve, but the city centre will get a Christmas makeover.”
He said City Walk, Garema Place and Petrie Plaza would be dressed for the season, with street art, decorations, lighting, a Christmas forest and entertainment to get Canberrans into the holiday spirit.
“Because of the positive feedback from last year’s Glebe Park-based festival it will again host a range of family-friendly Christmas activities, including a movie night and a family fun day filled with free activities,” Mr Barr said.
He said some of the highlights would include roving entertainers, scheduled performances and fun activities; a ticketed long-table dinner in Glebe Park on 13 December and a free movie night in Glebe Park with classic Christmas films on 14 December.
“This year’s event is being delivered by local event organisers, Damsel and Sprout, with funding from the City Renewal Authority, EventsACT and the City Centre Marketing and Improvement Levy,” the Chief Minister said.
