NIGERIA: Dedicated buses get officers to work

A new bus service to get Public Servants in the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to and from work has received a warm reception.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the 20-bus rapid transit system would ease the problems workers had with transport.

One Public Servant, Emmanuela Kalu said the initiative was long overdue and would ease the difficulties she faced in getting to work since her car was stolen.

“The scheme is a big relief to us on our route in particular,” Mrs Kalu said.

“I used to spend a lot on transportation when coming and going because of lack of buses directly from the city centre to where I live.”

Another worker, Elizabeth Elijah welcomed the scheme but pointed out that a similar initiative some years ago had ended after 12 months due to rising costs.

“It is a welcome development, but my fear is its sustainability,” Mrs Elijah said.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Government has declared a two-day holiday for its Public Servants to enable them to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

PVCs must be shown by anyone seeking to vote in a State or Federal General Election.

State Commissioner for Information, Emmanuel Musa said the Government did not want people, especially Public Servants, to miss out on the opportunity of exercising their constitutional right of participation in the electoral process.

“The Government of Niger State acknowledges the importance of workers in the democratic process and is aware that the only way workers can give life to their aspiration for a worker-friendly Government is through their votes,” Dr Musa said.

“Consequently, we have declared two work-free days in all Government offices across the State, to enable all Public Servants to pick up their PVCs so they can perform their civic duty.”
