The latest research into public transport by Transport Canberra has revealed that light rail has enticed many Canberrans to try public transport for the first time.

Minister for Transport, Chris Steel said more than two-thirds of survey respondents said they were more likely to use public transport now that the light rail was operational.

“The survey of 1,279 people found that 70 per cent of people said that”, Mr Steel said.

“Forty-two per cent of survey respondents are also now using light rail to get to work, compared with 35 per cent in 2020,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to see so many Canberrans getting on board and having such a positive experience, and we want to extend the same benefits to other parts of Canberra.”

Mr Steel said total patronage had already rebounded to approximately 75 per cent of pre-COVID-19 levels, even with COVID-safe travel advice still in place.

He said Transport Canberra’s Light Rail Customer Satisfaction Survey found that 80 per cent of participants were very likely to recommend the light rail to their friends or family; 63 per cent were very satisfied with the customer service of light rail staff; 76 per cent were very satisfied with the reliability of services; 64 per cent were very satisfied with the safety on light rail; and 81 per cent were very satisfied with the cleanliness on board the light rail and at the stops.
