Anzac Day 2022 is to be marked by Australia Post’s release of three new postage stamps featuring the vintage postcards published to be sent to Australians serving overseas during World War I (1914-1918).

The three stamps were extremely popular during the War, allowing loved ones to send messages of support to the tens of thousands of Australians serving overseas.

The three domestic $1.10 stamps in the issue are feature postcards of Australia’s Laughing Kookaburra, representing the naval, infantry and air forces through their hats.

Group Manager, Philatelic at Australia Post, Michael Zsolt said postcards during World War I not only provided news from home, but also formed a valuable wartime record of the voices of those serving their country.

“For those fighting or caring for the wounded, postcards were an important way of connecting with home half a world away, enabling them to reflect on daily life and share the emotions of the frontline,” Mr Zsolt said.

“The stamp images also capture beautifully the larrikin nature of Australians which has long been embraced as part of the Anzac spirit,” he said.

The stamps were designed by Jo Muré of the Australia Post Design Studio with the postcards held in the State Library Victoria’s collection.

The designs were produced by Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. in Australia to send to loved ones serving abroad.

The stamps and related products can be bought from participating Post Offices or by via mail order and further information is available online while stocks last with more information available from Australia Post’s website at this PS News link.
