WorkSafe ACT has reminded workers and employers of the importance of maintaining a focus on workplace safety during the short working weeks in April.
Work Safety Commissioner, Greg Jones (pictured) said it was common for employers and workers to feel the pressure to get jobs and projects completed when working weeks were shortened, but compressing work time should not come at the expense of safety.
“My message to all workers and employers is that no deadline is worth an injury to a worker,” Mr Jones said.
He said safety must remain the highest priority on all sites and workplaces at all times.
“I would encourage all employers, be it on work sites or in workplaces across the ACT, to remind workers of this,” Mr Jones said.
He said it was important for everyone to remain vigilant in keeping an eye out for safety risks, and the focus should remain throughout April.
Mr Jones said workers and employers should remember their responsibility to ensure worksites that were shut down for any breaks were safe and secure.
“It is critical to ensure sites are not subject to unauthorised entry; that any water run-off from sites is mitigated and the community knows who to contact if they have questions or concerns around a site,” he said.
