A crackdown on safety issues in escort and associated businesses in Fyshwick has led WorkSafe ACT to issue a number of Prohibition and Improvement Notices in the past week.
WorkSafe ACT inspectors joined ACT Police and Australian Border Force officers in attending a number of Fyshwick businesses, with safety of the premises and workers the key focus.
Work Safety Commissioner, Greg Jones (pictured) said inspectors found issues around electrical safety, fire risks and hygiene (such as high levels of mould).
“In total, three Prohibition Notices were issued to prevent the premises from being occupied or business being conducted from the premises,” Mr Jones said.
He said that in addition, two Improvement Notices were issued to adjoining premises for similar safety issues.
“The activity demonstrated good cooperation between law enforcement and regulatory Agencies to keep our community and our workers safe,” Mr Jones said.
He said businesses must ensure that workers were provided with a safe work environment free of hazards and risks.
“When this does not occur, WorkSafe ACT has no hesitation in issuing Prohibition Notices to stop trading or occupation of a building until safety issues are rectified.
“Other regulatory action will also be considered where it is appropriate to do so.”
He said the safety issues identified were significant and inspectors acted quickly.
Mr Jones reminded businesses to ensure that premises were safe for workers and patrons, with electrical and fire safety a particular risk at this time of year.
